A.J. McCarron starred at quarterback for Nick Saban and still plays in the NFL

Though he is only a middling backup quarterback at this point of his NFL career, A.J. McCarron had a phenomenal run while at Alabama. He may not have possessed the talent of many of the great Alabama signal-callers to follow him, but McCarron has carved out a solid eight-year NFL career with five different franchises. He now backs up Matt Ryan as a member of the Atlanta Falcons.

The Mobile native was instrumental in helping the Alabama program win three national titles during his time in school. Never the most gifted player physically, McCarron’s cerebral nature at the line of scrimmage ensured Saban that Alabama was never at a disadvantage in terms of preparation and execution while moving the ball. This would be a good landing spot for him.

Other former Alabama quarterbacks such as Mike Shula and Freddie Kitchens have gotten into the coaching profession. While McCarron could go into media like his predecessor Greg McElroy did, his successful Alabama career and multiple stops in the NFL would be a huge boost to a quarterback room in need of a coach. Big things happen to former Alabama offensive coordinators.

McCarron could stick in the NFL for a little longer, but he may be on his way towards coaching.
