Marcus Smart announces long-term contract extension with Celtics in awesome tweet

Marcus Smart personally announced his new contract extension with the Boston Celtics in an amazing Twitter message.

The Boston Celtics experienced some turnover at the point guard position in the offseason. Kemba Walker, their 2019 free agency acquisition is gone, and the team essentially replaced him with former Los Angeles Laker Dennis Schroder. But there is one constant on the position depth chart: Marcus Smart.

And he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Celtics and Smart have agreed to terms on a four-year, $77.1 million max contract extension on Monday.

Shortly after news broke, Smart confirmed the news himself in a tweet consisting of four-leaf clovers. The message consisted of seven clovers, signifying his seven years with the Celtics, followed by four more clovers that represent the number of years added to his deal via the extension.

Smart was set to enter the final season of his four-year, $52 million contract signed back in 2018, where he is set to earn $13.8 million in base salary, per Spotrac.

According to Charania, the new contract extension is fully guaranteed through the 2025-26 season and includes a trade kicker. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports that the deal does not include a player option.

Smart spent the entirety of his career in Boston ever since the team used the sixth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft on the Oklahoma State guard. While he showed this past season that he has the ability to put points on the board, he is perhaps best known for his defensive abilities. In fact, he was named to the NBA’s All-Defensive First Team in 2019 and 2020.

This past season, Smart averaged career highs in points (13.1) and assists per game (5.7), in addition to 1.5 steals a night. He struggled from the field, shooting 39.8 percent overall and 33 percent from 3-point range.

Even so, with Smart coming off a strong 2020-21 season, the Celtics rewarded him with a nice contract extension that hyped up both the guard and the team’s fanbase.
