Who won what medals at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics cycling events?
The 2021 Tokyo Olympics saw many cycling events — here is who won what.
While FanSided has so far covered only the road cycling competitions, there are actually five cycling disciplines, all of which had events in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. But if you could not watch it all, here is who won what.
The Olympic cycling road racing results
July 24 was the men’s road cycling where Geraint Thomas crashed out yet again and Ecuadorian rider Richard Carapaz who just came third at the 2021 Tour de France, winning gold in the road race.
Belgian rider Wout van Aert sprinted for second, beating favorite and 2021 and 2020 Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar who came in third to take bronze. The Netherlands’ Bauke Mollema came in fourth, Canadian Michael Woods came in fifth and American Brandon McNulty took sixth.
The next day saw Austria’s Anna Kiesenhofer take on and maintain a gap of over a minute, somehow unknown to the peloton and take gold, surprising Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten who thought she had won as she crossed the line but took silver.
Olympic mountain biking cross country results
Great Britain’s Thomas Pidcock held on to win the mountain biking cross country men’s race on July 26. Dutch rider Mathieu van der Poel who earlier this year won Tour de France stages and held onto the yellow jersey for a week before dropping out to train for the Tokyo Olympics, crashed on lap 5 and eventually dropped out due to pain.
The next day, Switzerland’s Joland Neff took gold in the women’s mountain biking cross country race. Her fellow Swiss riders Sina Frei and Linda Indergand took the silver and bronze medals sweeping the podium.
Olympic cycling individual time trial results
The break of a few days allowed many to rest up from the long road racing before tackling the individual time trials on July 28. In a feat that did not surprise anyone and in a bid to gain a gold medal after the silver in the road race, Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten won gold in 30: 30.49.
Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic also had a point to make after being forced to abandon the Tour de France with crashes in the early stages. He won gold in the individual time trial event in 55:04.19, Dutch rider Tom Dumoulin coming in second and Australian Rohan Dennis coming in third.
Olympic BMX racing and freestyle results
July 30 saw the BMX racing finals after qualifying rounds on July 29. Great Britain’s Bethany Shriever took gold in the women’s race while The Netherlands’ Niek Kieminen took gold in the men’s race.
On Aug. 1, Great Britain’s Charlotte Worthington performed the world’s first-ever backflip 360 and took gold in the women’s BMX freestyle final. Australia’s Logan Martin beat out the competition to take gold in the men’s BMX freestyle final.
Olympic track cycling results
The next week saw the final events for all the indoor track cycling events at the Izu Velodrome. China won the women’s team sprint final on Aug, 2 while the Netherlands won the men’s team sprint final on Aug. 3.
Aug. 4 saw both team pursuit finals with Germany winning the women’s event and Italy winning the men’s event. Matthew Walls added to Great Britain’s medal tally on Aug. 5 winning the men’s omnium final while Dutch rider Shanne Braspennincx won the women’s keirin final.
Dutch rider Harrie Lavreysen won the men’s individual sprint final the next day while Great Britain won the women’s madison final. Denmark took the win for the men’s madison final on Aug. 7.
Aug. 8 saw the final three events in the cycling disciplines at the Olympics. Great Britain’s Jason Kennedy won the men’s keirin final event and Canada’s Kelsey Mitchell won the women’s individual sprint final. The American Jennifer Valente held on and managed to gain enough points to win the women’s omnium final.
