3 Chiefs on the roster bubble playing for their jobs vs. Cardinals

The reigning AFC champions have a very talented roster. But who could be elsewhere sooner than later when it comes to Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs?

A Super Bowl win over the 49ers in 2019 was followed by this past season’s 31-9 setback at Tampa to the Buccaneers on a less-than-Super Sunday for Patrick Mahomes and company. Now the Kansas City Chiefs look to get back to the “Big Game” for the third consecutive year, following the lead of the New England Patriots (2016-18).

It won’t be easy and it never is. Teams like the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns are nipping at their heels. Of course, the Chiefs defeated all of those clubs a year ago, including the playoffs. But 2021 is a different year and it will most certainly be a different team that takes the field.

3. RB Darwin Thompson

With the final pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the then-defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs selected LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. He wound up playing and starting 13 regular-season games and finished with 1,100 yards from scrimmage and five scores. He also managed 64 yards on nine carries in the Super Bowl loss to the Buccaneers.

The team’s running back depth chart includes Darrel Williams and 2020 free-agent pickup Jerick McKinnon. So where does that leave 2019 sixth-round pick Darwin Thompson? He’s managed 333 yards from scrimmage and three TDs on 80 touches in two seasons.
