Team DSM’s Alberto Dainese was on Philipsen’s wheel in the final sprint but he still managed to keep ahead and take the win which also his third stage win overall at La Vuelta.

2021 La Vuelta a Espana standings overturned

With 12 kilometres to go in the 184.4-kilometre long stage from Tarancón to Albacete, a wheel touch caused a crash that claimed race leader Rein Taaramae among others.

Team DSM’s Romain Bardet also went down but while he caught up eventually to the main group, Taaramae could not make up the time.

The red jersey and overall lead then passed to Team Trek Segafredo’s Kenny Elissonde who was second in the overall standings and had finished the cut off time required.

Taaramae lost two minutes to the main group of riders and will have to make it up in future stages to get another chance at the red jersey.
