3 Steelers veterans who could be cut this preseason

With the Pittsburgh Steelers entering an all-important 2021 campaign, here are three veterans that could be cut by the end of training camp.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering a very important 2021 campaign. This could very well be the last ride for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who is returning on a restructured contract. Not only that, but the team as a whole underwent a ton of roster turnover.

Winning the AFC North is not going to be easy for the Steelers, especially with the presence of rivals and perennial contenders in the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens. With that, the Steelers may very well have to make some tough decisions on cut day, and some veterans could be shown the door. Here are three possible cut candidates for the Steelers.

The Steelers, as mentioned earlier, are going with “Big Ben” as their starting quarterback for the 2021 campaign. However, there is a quarterback competition in Pittsburgh, and that is to see who will be Roethlisberger’s primary backup. It is a three-player battle and likely two will remain on the 53-man roster.

The Steelers signed Mason Rudolph to a one-year contract extension that runs through the 2022 season. Then, the organization decided to bring in former Washington Football Team first-round pick Dwayne Haskins to add depth to the position.

Joshua Dobbs may be the odd man out.

Dobbs is a former 2017 fourth-round pick by Pittsburgh. He spent two full seasons as a backup behind Roethlisberger before he was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars prior to the 2019 season. After being waived by the Jaguars in 2020, Dobbs was claimed by the Steelers.

Given that Rudolph is ranked highly on the depth chart and with Haskins shining in the preseason, Dobbs may very well be one of the roster cuts ahead of the regular-season.
