College football: Predicting the last-place team from every Power Five conference
Big 12: Kansas
Kansas hired Les Miles for recruiting credibility from his time at LSU. A myriad of sexual misconduct allegations from his time in Baton Rouge later, this era is over. The result: two years of a combined 3-18 record, with just one Big 12 win.
This football program was a mess before Miles entered the fray, routinely finishing in last place. Little did anyone know it would actually worsen, with Miles covering up bullying allegations made against multiple players on the team, according to the Kansas City Star.
Lance Leipold now has the monumental task as the head coach of his program. Whether he will have enough time to dig this team out of the trenches is unclear, given the talented depleted roster at his disposal and slew of Big 12 teams who are simply better than these perennial underachievers.
The 2021 season will just be the first step in an attempt at recovery. They have a weak nonconference schedule to amass a few wins, but once Big 12 play starts, it’s all downhill. Maybe they fight with Baylor, Texas Tech and Kansas State, but those teams will likely be favored in their respective matchups. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Kansas lose to all of them. Surely, Oklahoma and Texas will wipe them clean off the gridiron, too.
Kansas is destined for last place. Nothing works in their favor this season. Catching just one break along the way will make this fall some kind of success, it just won’t be what everyone else defines as significant progress.
