Running back Kalen Ballage

Running backs will have to be part of the roster cuts coming down the line. Kalen Ballage should not be part of them.

Against the Lions, Ballage came back from missing the second preseason game with 30 yards on seven carries plus two catches for 17 yards.

The lower-body injury that nixed his participation against the Eagles could have been a serious blow to Ballage’s challenge for a roster spot. Instead, the 25-year-old showed it was only a blip. He needed to come out strong on Saturday and he got the job done by outperforming Jaylen Samuels and Anthony McFarland.

Ballage hasn’t had an incredible track record during his NFL career so far. The former fourth-round selection by the Dolphins jas a career yards per carry average of 3.1. Still, last season with the Chargers, he was a productive backup with the ability to contribute in the passing game as well.

At this stage, it shouldn’t be a question of whether or not Ballage makes the roster. The Steelers may be pondering if he might be the best option to back up Najee Harris.
