The Atlanta Braves were screwed over by instant replay against the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. We’re not really sure why.
The Atlanta Braves and the New York Yankees took part in the final contest of their two-game series on Tuesday night. Both teams are jockeying for postseason positions, with Atlanta looking to extend their lead in the NL East, while New York sought to increase their lead in the AL Wild Card competition.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Freddie Freeman ran home on a single by Austin Riley, but was called out at the plate. The video, as follows, appears to show Freeman sliding under the glove of Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez. That is not the interpretation of the umpiring crew, however, as they upheld the ruling on the field.
Freddie Freeman is called out at home and the call is confirmed after review. The relay throw from Andrew Velazquez to Gary Sánchez allows the Yankees to keep a 4-3 lead. #YANKSonYES pic.twitter.com/lH1HzBNhZJ

Freddie Freeman was obviously safe but MLB can’t stop kowtowing to the Evil Empire https://t.co/4k4Pg2P4l2

Braves screwed over by replay review vs. Yankees
Braves fans and MLB media alike criticized the call, and for good reason.
Replay goes against the Braves. Who knows why.

Call is upheld. Sure looked like he got his foot on the plate ahead of the tag on his back. But replay system is flawed in that umps won't change any call unless absolutely indisputable evidence, which is rare.

So, it's 4-3 Yankees after 5 inn. Rodriguez starts 6th for #Braves.
That would have been the tying run. Instead, the Braves were down 4-3 as a result of the botched replay. To make matters worse, Atlanta’s deficit increased following a solo home run by Yankees infielder Rougned Odor in the top of the seventh inning.
Safe to say, this play will be dissected relentlessly throughout the week.
