Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley preview and prediction
Tyron Woodley is the biggest threat to Jake Paul so far in his professional boxing career. What makes Woodley so dangerous, and who will win?
Jake Paul continues his boxing career on Sunday, Aug. 29, against former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. This is by far the toughest test of Paul’s budding boxing career.
Paul (3-0, 3 KOs) has a perfect knockout rating, with his last victory coming against former MMA fighter Ben Askren in April. Askren had a strong MMA career, but the wrestler’s striking was always a concern.
It didn’t help that Askren came into their contests in awful physical shape. That won’t be the case with Woodley. Woodley is chiseled and was a former UFC champion. He has never boxed before, but striking was a routine part of Woodley’s MMA training.
Paul vs. Woodley is another intriguing matchup that could bring Paul’s boxing dreams to an end.
Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley preview
Although Woodley has years of combat experience, he has never taken part in a professional boxing match. Oddly, Paul has the experience advantage over Woodley.
When it comes to physical toughness, Woodley has the edge. With 15 years as a professional MMA fighter under his belt, Woodley has been around the block and has fought against every type of style there is.
However, that was in an octagon, not a boxing ring.
Paul has proven knockout power as a boxer, but 7 of 19 of Woodley’s MMA victories came from strikes, which bodes well for Woodley. His pre-MMA background is as a wrestler, where he was an All-American at the University of Missouri. Still, he proved to be an electric puncher at times during his time in the UFC. He reigned as the UFC welterweight champion for nearly three years but has lost his last four fights in a row.
Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley prediction
Is Woodley that person to put an end to Paul’s winning ways?
Probably not.
Woodley is a combat sports veteran, but his lack of expertise as a boxer is detrimental to his chances. He can punch, but it’s not his forte.
Paul has all the physical advantages over Woodley. At 24 years old, he’s 15 years younger than Woodley. He’s also 6-foot-1, which gives him 4 inches on Woodley, but he only enjoys a 2-inch reach advantage.
Woodley will come shredded for war, but his skills have diminished. He lacks the speed and reflexes he once had, and will likely look flatfooted, and lack lateral movement.
Expect Paul to use his jab to keep Woodley away. He will try to throw combinations off of his jab, but Woodley has a good enough chin that he should be able to last eight rounds with Paul.
The likeliest outcome is a Paul victory by unanimous decision because of his physical size and the threat created by his knockout power, but Woodley can hang the entire way. Paul will remain undefeated but will lose his perfect knockout rating.
