College football is finally returning and the Big Ten is here to kick off the action.
Nebraska and Illinois have the honor of competing in the first game of the 2021 season.
They were supposed to do it in Ireland, but COVID-19 scuppered that plan. Instead, they’ll head to Champaign.
Scott Frost is on the hot seat. Bret Bielema is just getting started with Illinois. Who will start their season off on the right foot?
Nebraska vs. Illini odds for Week 0
Odds for the Cornhuskers and Illini opened with Nebraska as a 9.5-point favorite. They’re now favored by just seven points. The over/under for the game is 55 points.
Nebraska injury report vs. Illinois in Week 0
Illinois will be without wide receiver Marquez Beason and offensive lineman Jordyn Slaughter. Defensive linemen Roderick Perry II and Jamal Woods are questionable.
The Cornhuskers won’t have highly-touted freshman tight end Thomas Fidone after he suffered a non-contact knee injury during the spring. At best, he’ll make an appearance late in the season.
Senior linebacker Will Honas also had a non-contact injury during camp and is out indefinitely.
Markese Stepp Injury Update
The most pressing injury question for the Huskers in Week 0 revolves around USC transfer Markese Stepp, who missed Spring Camp with a toe injury but has been full-go in Fall Camp. He should be good to go for the season opener.
Nebraska vs. Illinois prediction for Week 0
Nebraska returns veteran quarterback Adrian Martinez and a defense full of experience. Illinois also brings back a largely complete defense, though one that gave up 34.9 points per game. They’re losing key targets on offense, including their leading receiver.
One of the Illini’s two wins last season came against the Cornhuskers, so anything could happen in this one. Still, the road team should have an edge on both sides of the ball.
Expect Frost and company to pull away while taking advantage of Illinois’ vulnerable defense.
Prediction: Nebraska 27-Illinois 20
