The Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers play in what will serve as their final tune-up before the start of the regular season.

Neither team is likely to feature too many important starters on Friday night, as it would be a moot point to risk injury this close to the regular season. However, it is a chance for several high-caliber backups to notch a roster spot, if they haven’t already done so.

For the Steelers, Dwayne Haskins gets the starting not at quarterback, meaning he’s probably already lost the backup competition with Mason Rudolph. The Steelers see Haskins as a potential fit for life after Ben Roethlisberger, so it makes sense to give him a redshirt year of sorts if they can afford to do so.

Haskins has excelled this preseason, however, in limited playing time. Some Steelers fans have even called for the front office to trade Rudolph, although he hasn’t necessarily done anything wrong to lose his roster spot.

The Panthers will not start Sam Darnold, and rightly so. But Matt Rhule’s success this year depends primarily on his quarterback, and if the former first-round pick can make the necessary jump when he’s not, ya know, stuck on the Jets.
