Justin Turner is pitching for the Dodgers, yes, THAT Justin Turner (Video)
Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner had to come in and pitch the ninth inning when LA was short on bullpen arms against the Rockies.
If you had money on Justin Turner pitching a scoreless ninth inning for the Dodgers this year, congratulations! You just won big.
This isn’t a Will Smith situation. We’re talking about that Justin Turner and yes, the red-beared third baseman took the mound against the Rockies on Sunday.
As far as pitching appearances for position players, Turner did pretty darn well too. He came off with a clean ERA and got a standing ovation from the crowd at Dodger Stadium, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Justin Turner pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Dodgers
The inning started somewhat rough as Turner gave up singles to Trevor Story and C.J. Cron. However, he got out of trouble by retiring the next three batters. Rio Ruiz and Dom Nuñez flied out while Sam Hilliard grounded to first.
In total, Turner tossed three strikes with his fasted pitch coming in at 76 miles per hour.
The Dodgers ultimately lost 5-0. Despite Turner’s pitching heroics, they still faced a deficit in the bottom of the ninth. No rally materialized and the game ended on Turner’s ground out to shortstop.
LA was in the position to use Turner as a pitcher because of struggles on the mound to start the game. Mitch White gave up six hits and three runs in 3.1 innings of action. Brusdar Graterol, Justin Bruihl, Joe Kelly, Shane Greene and Kenley Jansen also made appearances. Kelly gave up the other two runs in the seventh inning.
Apparently, this is something Turner has been asking to do. David Vassegh of AM 570 in Los Angeles said Turner told him “he’s been urging Dave Roberts to let him pitch if they needed a position player.”
