Cam Newton being released by the New England Patriots bring retirement into question.

After being released by the New England Patriots on Tuesday morning, there is a chance Cam Newton hangs up the spikes.

The former NFL MVP and franchise quarterback of the Carolina Panthers has not been the same player since Super Bowl 50. While he should be remembered as a legend in Charlotte and in college football for his brilliant 2010 season at Auburn, we have to wonder if Newton decides to retire rather than be a stop-gap starter or a backup quarterback for what is now a third NFL team.

What are the chances Newton calls it a career after 10 seasons in the NFL and 11 training camps?

With Newton being cut by the Patriots, it signifies that his days as being considered a serious starting quarterback are over. While he only turned 32-years-old back in May, Newton has been a sub-.500 quarterback since the 2018 campaign. He has taken a beating physically as a dual-threat playmaker and though he is built like a Greek god, it’s fair to wonder if this is the end of the line.

So will Newton retire?

Probably not right away.

He is good enough to start for about four or five teams in the league this year. Obviously, his vaccination status could make things difficult for him to go to another organization. However, we are one bad injury away from a quarterback-desperate team giving Newton’s representation a buzz. Look for him to play somewhere this year.

While Newton is not for long in the NFL, there is a great chance we have not seen the last of him.
