The nation’s capital is the perfect landing spot for Newton. Ron Rivera presided over Newton’s most productive period as a player and could attempt to bring back some of that magic in the NFC East.

Of course, signing Newton could invite a high-profile quarterback controversy. Ryan Fitzpatrick is firmly entrenched as the team’s starter at the moment and adding Newton to the mix would prompt serious questions about the team’s belief in the former Harvard star.

Fitzpatrick isn’t so talented or young enough to stop Washington from doing all they can to add competition in their quarterback room. At the very least, Newton can offer opponents a much different look when Washington fails to move the ball consistently with Fitzpatrick at the helm. At best, Newton can help Rivera forge the sort of physical identity he craves on the offensive side of the ball.

Rivera is smart enough to know that he can’t turn Newton into an MVP again, but he might be able to get above-average production from him if he tailors his offense to his former signal caller’s strengths. Signing Newton would be a big sea change for Washington, but it could make them much more interesting in one of the NFL’s most competitive divisions.
