Chicago White Sox are calling up a surging shortstop prospect

The Chicago White Sox aren’t only trying to win a World Series this year, they’re taking a glimpse into the future of the South Side.
While the Chicago White Sox remain in the thick of a World Series race, dominating the AL Central and posting one of the best records in baseball, eyes in the front office are also trained on the future.
Chicago has the sixth-best record in MLB and is essentially a lock to make it back to the postseason this year. Whether or not the White Sox have what it takes to bring a World Series title back to the South Side remains yet to be seen, but the roster of young talent certainly seems ready to make a deep run in October.
The current state of the White Sox isn’t causing the front office to lose sight of the future, however.
According to FanSided’s MLB Insider Robert Murray, the White Sox aren’t wasting any time in making a September callup of a top prospect.
“Romy Gonzalez is being called up by the Chicago White Sox,” Murray reported on Wednesday morning. “Very impressive in AA and AAA this season, hitting .275/.357/.525 with 23 homers in 335 at-bats. White Sox clearly not afraid to call up a rookie in a postseason race.”
Gonzalez was ranked as the White Sox 21st-best prospect before the season but has surged in the minors this season. Calling up the shortstop to see what Chicago has in him serves more purpose than just giving him some service time at the Major League level.
After trading away former first-round pick Nick Madrigal to acquire Craig Kimbrel from the crosstown Cubs at the trade deadline, the White Sox have an opening in the infield that could get filled from within.
Trading away Madrigal to secure a potential World Series-winning piece of the roster and not being able to stay in-house to replace him would be a huge win for the White Sox.
