Mets: Only 1 man is cut out to fix this mess
By Mark Powell
The New York Mets must turn their franchise over to Theo Epstein. He is the only person who can fix this mess.
Epstein has operated in chaos before. He won multiple Word Series’ with the Boston Red Sox — their first in nearly a century. He then took the Chicago Cubs and ended that cursed stretch, winning their first World Series in 108 years.
So, fixing the Mets really shouldn’t seem all that hard in comparison, right?
When you factor in the last two general managers were 1) caught sending lewd images to reporters or 2) arrest for drunk driving, Epstein ought to be worshipped like a godsend. Build the statue now, even if he can’t deliver. Please, just bring some normalcy to Queens.
New York Mets must hire Theo Epstein this offseason
Epstein currently works for MLB as a consultant to the league office. It would be a near-seamless transition, as the Mets wouldn’t even have to pay a buyout clause. Start the negotiating now, and let Epstein pick a number. Steve Cohen can afford it.
On Tuesday morning, current general manager Zack Scott was arrested for DUI at 4 a.m. ET after attending a charity event at Cohen’s home. The arrest happened nearly eight hours after Cohen’s charity event ended.
With the Mets, Epstein would have near-autonomy, and all the money in the world to spend, assuming it would turn this team into a winning product. Sure, Cohen wants to make money on the Mets, but for the most part they are his hobby. He’s a sports fan, and an owner who fancies himself a modern-day Steinbrenner. He’s Mark Cuban with a more active Twitter account.
Assuming Epstein is ready to leave the league office for his next challenge, there is no better option out there than the Mets. After bringing the Yankees’ greatest enemy several world championships, he can do it again with their crosstown rival.
