Paul Millsap spurns the Warriors, signs with the Brooklyn Nets

Paul Millsap was the best NBA free agent still available, and he has chosen the Brooklyn Nets.

As the second wave of NBA free agency went on, Paul Millsap stood as the best player available. He was getting alot of interest as a result, and according to Shams Charania of The Athletic the veteran power forward has agreed to a deal with the Brooklyn Nets.

Millsap reportedly considered several playoff contenders. Charania named the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers and Chicago Bulls–who were among his known suitors. But he spurned the others for the Nets, where he’ll add veteran depth to the frontcourt of a team with legit championship aspirations.

Paul Millsap is no longer an underrated star, but he still brings value

Millsap spent the last four seasons with the Denver Nuggets. He averaged just 9.0 points per game last season, his lowest mark in that category since his second year in the league. His 4.7 rebounds per game were a career-low, as he played in 56 games (starting 36) and he fell below 21 minutes per game for the first time since his second season. He is not the player he was when he made four straight All-Star appearances with the Atlanta Hawks.

But Millsap shot 47.6 percent from the floor last season, with a still-solid 34.3 percent rate from beyond the arc (43.5 percent from 3-point range in 2019-20 is a career outlier). In general he has evolved as the game has, taking more 3s over the last several years without being a detriment in that area.

Millsap will be a role player in Brooklyn, as Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving bring the star power and share the pressure of expectations. Numbers along the line of last year’s will be fine, and Millsap will surely have an occasional pop-up game where he scores 15-20 points.
