Someone lost a $220,000 bet after failing to cover 36-point spread during Thursday’s Tennessee-Bowling Green game.

The 2021 college football season is underway, which not only means that fans can watch their favorite teams attempt to win their games for National Championship glory, but to also bet on games. As is the case nearly every week, one unfortunate bettor experiences some really bad luck.

In the very first week, an individual bet $220,000 that Tennessee would cover a 36-point spread against Bowling Green on Thursday night. They were oh so close, as the Volunteers were threatening to extend their 38-6 lead with less than a minute of game time remaining. Unfortunately, running back Marcus Pierce Jr. fumbled the handoff at Bowling Green’s own 24 yard line, allowing Bowling Green to recover.

What a way to lose that amount of money.

Besides this person’s wallet being $220,000 lighter, the Volunteers had themselves a great night to open up the season. Tennessee’s offense thrived, specifically their rushing attack, as they accumulated a grand total of 331 yards on the ground. Jabari Small rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries, while Tiyon Evans tallied 116 yards and scored one touchdown on 16 attempts.

As for Bowling Green, they were limited to 218 total yards of offense and two field goals on the night.
