Is Virginia Tech a military college? Yes, the Hokies offer Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs designating them as a senior military college.

When Virginia Tech successfully upset the North Carolina Tar Heels to begin the 2021 college football season, you might have noticed Hokies fans in military fatigues storming the field.

That had a lot of people wondering the same question…

Is Virginia Tech a military college?

Yes, Virginia Tech is a Senior Military College. That means it offers military Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) programs under a specific section of the law. It is one of six United State colleges that offer an SMC education, along with Norwich University, Texas A&M, The Citadel, Virginia Military Institute and the University of North Georgia.

The university was founded with the Corps of Cadets in place in 1872. It provides training similar to that found at service academies.

While Va Tech is also a public land-grant research university, the military connection has remained strong from the beginning.  There are still 1,200 cadets enrolled in the program.
