Spencer Sanders will not start Oklahoma State’s season opener because of COVID protocols, Shane Illingworth starts for the Pokes.

Oklahoma State will be without starting quarterback Spencer Sanders for tonight’s season opener against Missouri State.

Sanders is in COVID protocols so he may return for the next game. With Sanders out, sophomore Shane Illingworth gets the nod.

Spencer Sanders out due to COVID protocols, Shane Illingworth starts for Oklahoma State vs. Missouri State

The loss of Sanders shouldn’t be too much to change the outcome of the game considering Mike Gundy‘s team are 38-point favorites.

It’s also unclear if Sanders tested positive for COVID or if he’s just been in close contact with someone who has. It’s also unclear if Sanders has been vaccinated against COVID.

Illingworth completed 41-of-70 passes for 554 yards and four touchdowns to one interception in parts of four games last season. If Illingworth dominates against Missouri State, perhaps there’s a chance this is not just a one-game stint as the starter and he keeps Sanders out of the starting lineup moving forward.
