Longtime UConn head coach Randy Edsall is done with coaching. He announced plans to retire at the end of the 2021 season after a nightmare start.
Randy Edsall has led UConn for 16 seasons. Thatāll be it.
The Huskies head coach released a statement on Sunday, planning to retire at the end of 2021 season.
āBack in 2017, I made a commitment to the University, but felt it was better to make this announcement now rather than the end of the year to allow the University ample time to prepare for the future of the Football program,ā Edsall wrote. āAll my focus and attention for the rest of the season will be to prepare our players and coaches to go out and win as many games as possible.ā
Randy Edsall is retiring at the end of UConnās 2021 season
Edsallās time with UConn has felt limited for a while now. Since returning to his post as head coach in 2017, he hasnāt won more than three games in a season.
This year, the Huskies opened the campaign with a 45-0 shutout at the hands of Fresno State. They followed that up in Week 2 by losing to FCS Holy Cross.
This is ultimately for the best. UConn was going to have to make the tough choice to move on without Edsall soon anyways. Now he gets to go out without contention while the program has a full season to weigh their options for their next head coach.
Edsall led the Huskies to two Big East conference titles in his first stint with the program. He left for Maryland in 2011 and returned after posting a 22-34 record with the Terrapins
