Anthony Rizzo and Javy Baez embracing in Subway Series will melt Cubs’ fans hearts
By Mark Powell
Anthony Rizzo and Javy Baez embraced in the Subway Series, as the former Cubs teammates took separate sides for the Yankees and Mets, respectively.
Both Javy and Rizzo were traded at the deadline as the Cubs attempted to clean house, getting the most prospect value as possible for the stars who, at this point, appear to still be in their prime.
The Yankees acquired Rizzo and cash considerations for minor league right-handed pitcher Alexander Vizcaíno and outfielder Kevin Alcántara. Meanwhile, the Mets traded for Baez along with pitcher Trevor Williams for Pete Crow-Armstrong.
Both deals were relatively minor in nature given the return the Cubs got back, and expected.
Since, the Yankees and Mets have struggled, as the trades haven’t had the desired effect. The Mets offense remains inept, and Rizzo, despite a fast start, hasn’t been able to outplay Luke Voit at first base.
Mets and Yankees struggling heading into Subway Series
The reunion of Rizzo and Baez is a small subplot in what’s sure to be an intriguing weekend series in Queens.
The Mets’ offense has been rather inept all season, and despite the thumbs down controversy Baez conjured up, Javy hasn’t been able to light a fire under this bunch.
As for the Yankees, they are losers of eight of 10, and four straight at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays. Friday night’s affair isn’t going much better, either. New York is just a half-game ahead of Toronto as of this writing for the second Wild Card spot.
