Iowa and Iowa State renew the always-heated CyHawk rivalry on Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium and we have everything college football fans need for the game.
Ahead of another epic battle for the CyHawk Trophy, the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones had very different starts to the 2021 college football season. In the case of the former, they played a ranked Indiana team and dominated them, leaving no doubt. The latter, however, played FCS Northern Iowa and needed all 60 minutes to pull out a narrow victory ahead of the rivalry game in Week 2.
This is supposed to be the golden age of Cyclones football and they very much couldāve been looking ahead. But at the same time, head coach Matt Campbell has never gotten a victory over his in-state rivals since he arrived in Ames, despite all the success heās had. Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeyes certainly have no intentions of changing that trend either.
So how will one of the biggest games of college football Week 2 play out? We have the game covered from every angle to help you prepare.

If nothing else, you canāt say the oddsmakers are overreacting to what happened in Week 1. The Hawkeyes were the clearly more dominant team out of the two competing for the CyHawk Trophy, yet the Cyclones getting to play at Ames is apparently enticing enough to instill them as over four-point favorites.
My gut tells me to lean towards the Hawkeyes in this one as theyāve dominated the rivalry and should certainly keep this one close even if they donāt get the win. Moreover, the under has been cashing tremendously well in this rivalry, so my lean stays there as well.
Iowa injury report vs. Iowa State NCAA Week 2
The Hawkeyes are expected to be without starting guard Kyler Schott for the second straight week after he injured himself on the family farm. Moreover, itāll be interesting to watch the health of wide receiver Charlie Jones after he left the season-opener with an injury.
Charlie Kolar Injury Update
In the scare against an FCS opponent to open the year, the Cyclones were without All-American tight end Charlie Kolar due to an ankle injury. That certainly had a big effect on the haphazard offense but things do seem a bit optimistic. The Iowa State coaching staff indicated that they are confident in the tight endās recovery, indicating that he and their other key injuries should be able to play against their in-state rivals.
Iowa vs. Iowa State Prediction NCAA Week 2
All told, weāre not going to read too much into what we saw last week. NIU is a tough team and thereās a good chance the Cyclones just werenāt tipping their hand for this game. On top of that, the Hawkeyes did get some fortunate turnover luck to win so emphatically over Indiana in their season-opener.
While that all might be true, Iowa just looked like the better football team in Week 1 and I canāt shake that as they come into this matchup as an underdog and not having lost to their rivals since Matt Campbell took over the Cyclones. Thatās going to play into this one and the fans in Ames are, ultimately, going to be let down once again.Ā Final Score: Iowa 20, Iowa State 18

Once the Hawkeyes get past this game, the sledding is quite easy for Ferentz and his team before they get into Big Ten play in October. Both Kent State next week and Colorado State the week after are tough matchups that could potentially trip them up.
