Ohio Stadium hasn’t seen too many losses from the Ohio State football team.

For the first time since 2017, Ohio State lost at Ohio Stadium.

Ohio State lost to Oregon on Saturday in a game they never could command. The Ducks controlled the ground game with a physical offensive line and great running from CJ Verdell.

This marked the first loss in front of Ohio Stadium fans since Week 2 of the 2017 season when Baker Mayfield and the Oklahoma Sooners beat Ohio State.

Ohio State loses at home for first time since 2017

The Sept. 9, 2017 game was the last time Buckeyes fans left Ohio Stadium without a win, a span of 23 games. That was the game where Mayfield, the eventual Heisman winner and No. 1 pick, planted the flag in the turf or at least attempted to.

Ohio State went on to lose a second game later that year, falling to Iowa, which eliminated them from College Football Playoff consideration.

Losing to Oregon, a playoff contender at this point isn’t an eliminator, but the margin of error has been drastically reduced. Ryan Day’s team has to run the table the rest of the season, which is certainly possible, to have a shot at earning a spot in the four-team field.

While it’s possible, the defense has to play a lot better than it showed vs. Oregon and in the winning effort vs. Minnesota in the opener.
