Marshon Lattimore injury means Saints are almost out of cornerbacks

The New Orleans Saints received bad news regarding cornerback Marshon Lattimore ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

The New Orleans Saints begin a new era on Sunday, as they take the field without Drew Brees as their starting quarterback for Week 1. Entering the season, the team had a weakness at cornerback, and as it turns out, the positional depth got a lot weaker thanks to an update from the team.

On Saturday evening, the Saints revealed that star cornerback Marshon Lattimore is officially downgraded to questionable for the team’s Week 1 game against the Green Bay Packers due to a knee injury. Lattimore was listed as a full participant for Friday’s practice, a day after being limited due to a knee issue.

This is not the news that Saints fans needed to hear less than 24 hours before kickoff.

The Saints are already shorthanded at the cornerback position entering the big game on Sunday. Bradley Roby, whom the team acquired in a trade with the Houston Texans, is not available for the Saints, while Ken Crawley was placed on the injured reserve due to a hamstring injury.

Based off the team’s depth chart and by the process of elimination, that means the Saints will have Desmond Trufant and Paulson Adebo as their starting cornerbacks to face off against the Packers’ high-powered offense.

Lattimore was coming off a 2020 season where he recorded 62 combined tackles (two for loss), 11 defended passes and two interceptions through 14 regular-season games. In coverage, Lattimore surrendered 45 completions for 626 yards and seven touchdowns on 85 targets, per Pro Football Reference.

Lattimore’s status will be one to follow leading up to the 4:25 p.m. kickoff on Sunday. Saints fans are certainly keeping their fingers crossed that the star corner will be good to go for the game.
