Texas football: Who deserves the most blame after getting upset by Arkansas?
By John Buhler
Texas was burnt to a crisp on Saturday when the Longhorns took on Arkansas in Fayetteville.
After all these years, the Arkansas Razorbacks still hate the Texas Longhorns with every fiber of their being.
These old Southwest Conference foes met in Fayetteville on Saturday night. With Texas being the No. 15 team in the land and heading to the SEC in a few years, Arkansas took advantage of their historic rival for everyone to see. This is without question one of the very best wins the Hogs have had in a decade. They are humming under Sam Pittman, while Steve Sarkisian has to regroup.
Here are the three biggest culprits for Texas looking completely outclassed vs. the Razorbacks.
Texas football: Who deserves the most blame for Arkansas loss?
3. If Texas wants to play in the SEC, the defensive line cannot play like this
While it is understood that Pittman is a phenomenal offensive line coach, Texas got worked at the line of scrimmage all night. It is a testament to all the hard work the Hogs have put in over the last two years, as well as a measuring stick for how far Texas will have to come to compete in the SEC. They can win games with these players in Big 12 play, but they have to get better in the trenches. Arkansas ran for 333 yards on 7.1 yards per carry and four touchdowns. That’s dominating the line of scrimmage and it’s going to be a rough film session for the Texas defensive line.
2. Hudson Card was not ready for the moment
One would think with him winning the starting job out of camp that Hudson Card would look better than what he did on Saturday night. Yes, playing at Razorback Stadium is not easy, but you are the starting quarterback of Texas. Play like it. Card was 8-of-15 for 61 yards and failed to throw a touchdown. After an encouraging debut last week vs. Louisiana it’s fair to wonder if Card lost his job to Thompson after the paltry performance.
1. This loss is damning for Steve Sarkisian if he wants to change the culture
Without question, this all falls on the head coach. Of course, he will take all the blame for it, but this was a loss that can’t happen on his watch. He picked the wrong quarterback and his team looked incredibly soft against a rebuilding Arkansas squad. Simply, it looked like Arkansas wanted to win this game more than Texas who folded early and couldn’t recover.
