Unlike Ryan Day, Urban Meyer would not have let the Ohio StateĀ football team lose to Oregon.
Even though Mario Cristobal is doing a phenomenal job as the Oregon football coach, Ohio State football fans are dealing with the harsh reality that Ryan Day is not Urban Meyer.
This may be Dayās third year at the helm in Columbus, but we are starting to see a few differences for how the Buckeyes play under him, as opposed to how they did when under Meyer. While C.J. Stroud threw for a ton of yards on Saturday, the Buckeyes defense could not stop a nosebleed, as the Ducks ran right through them all afternoon long. It was the difference in the high-profile game.
Ohio State has its whole season ahead of it, but we must wonder if Day can get them over the top.
Ryan Day is no Urban Meyer, as Buckeyes lose to Ducks in The Horseshoe
While Meyer is destined to experience a ton of losing in Jacksonville, he hated losing when he was running a college program. From Bowling Green to Utah to Florida to Ohio State, he lost 32 games in 17 years. Even though he is more of a culture builder than anything, he would not have let Oregon rush for almost 300 yards in the signature game of the early-afternoon window at home.
Under Meyer, you never felt Ohio State overlooked an opponent. Yes, the Buckeyes would occasionally lose a Big Ten game, but he would make adjustments vs. a worthy adversary. This is the third time we have seen Day in the last three years not do so in a huge spot. Ohio State can still win the Big Ten this season, but do not expect the Buckeyes to win a playoff game or two.
Simply put, Ohio State is not showing enough grit under Day as we came to expect under Meyer.
