Daniel Jones is off to another rough start with the Giants
By John Buhler
Daniel Jones has to get it turned around if he wants to remain the New York Giants’ starter.
While the score was closer than the game indicated, the New York Giants cannot be overly thrilled with what they saw out of third-year starting quarterback Daniel Jones in Week 1.
On the weekend of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, both New York teams got pushed around by their opposition in their Week 1 defeats. While Jones took it in himself with the game already over to make it 27-13, the Denver Broncos thoroughly dominated the G-Men throughout the contest. This was Jones’ 27th career start for the Giants, and he may not be getting all that many more.
Though his numbers were okay, Jones must be better if he wants to stay the face of the franchise.
Daniel Jones’ third season as the New York Giants QB is off to a rough start
Yes, this may have been a bit of a Pat Shurmur revenge game, but Jones is not doing a good job of keeping up with the Joneses across the NFL. It is not like general manager Dave Gettleman has not surrounded him with the talent to compete. Although head coach Joe Judge could be an issue, New York is not sniffing the playoffs if Jones stays a bottom-eighth starting quarterback in the league.
If this were a few decades ago, Jones would be in a good spot. However, quarterbacks are coming into the NFL with more and more banked reps under their belts. So you can tell pretty early if a guy has it or does not. If you have your doubts about a quarterback in his third year with a team, it is a pretty strong indication he is probably not the guy. Jones still has some time, but he is running out.
How well Jones plays or not in September and October will decide the future of his NFL career.
