Philadelphia Eagles first-round rookie DeVonta Smith caught his first career touchdown, on a perfectly thrown pass from Jalen Hurts in the first quarter against the Falcons

The Eagles’ first-round pick made a strong impression in the first quarter of his first NFL game, as DeVonta Smith caught his first career touchdown Sunday afternoon against the Atlanta Falcons.

Smith, chosen by the Eagles No. 10 overall in this spring’s NFL Draft, already forging a strong chemistry with second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts wasted little time making an impact on Philadelphia’s offense.

With 6:18 remaining in the first quarter, Hurts capped the Eagles’ first possession by hauling in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Hurts to give Philadelphia a 7-3 lead over the Falcons, at Mercedes Benz Stadium.

Smith got a step on Falcons cornerback Fabian Moreau, and didn’t look back, as Hurts fired a perfectly placed pass, hitting the rookie wide receiver in stride for the score.

Hurts was flawless on the drive, completing all four of his passing attempts for 41 yards and a touchdown, even adding an 11-yard run on a designed RPO. If Hurts can execute the offense at this high a level consistently, he’ll go a long way towards silencing the doubters, even within the Eagles’ organization.

The Eagles spent the offseason constructing an offense around Hurts centered on speed; with wide receivers Jaelen Reagor, Quez Watkins, and running back Miles Sanders, but it would seem that Smith has the potential to make the biggest impact of them all.
