Benches clear in Mets-Yankees as Giancarlo Stanton calls out Francisco Lindor (Video)

Things got heated on Sunday night in the Subway Series, as Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton called out Francisco Lindor.

In the finale of New York’s Subway Series between the Yankees and Mets, there was indeed some bad blood. It all came to a head in Sunday’s game.

Shortstop Francisco Lindor hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, and made a whistling motion to the Yankees dugout. Lindor did so, per ESPN’s Buster Olney, because the Mets claim they heard whistling from the Yankees dugout in Saturday’s game because Taijuan Walker was evidently tipping his pitches.

Outfielder Giancarlo Stanton and the Yankees did not take kindly to this, and Stanton made a slow trot around the bases for his game-tying two-run homer in the seventh and exchanged some words with Lindor. That led to the benches clearing.

Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole angrily leapt over the dugout barrier and marched onto the field. Mets second baseman Javier Baez was visibly mad as he stood next to Lindor, making motions towards the Yankees. Outfielder Brett Gardner then trolled the Mets by throwing the thumbs down gesture towards them.

Despite the theatrics from both teams, no punches were thrown and no one was ejected from the contest.

As for Saturday’s game, the Yankees ended up winning 8-7 after overcoming a 7-5 deficit. Walker surrendered five earned runs on six hits while striking out eight batters in six innings of work. The loss was assessed to relief pitcher Trevor May.

What a way for the 2021 edition of the Subway Series to conclude.
