The Carolina Panthers and Sam Darnold open their season against Darnold’s old team: The New York Jets.

Shortly after kickoff on Sunday, Sam Darnold will take his first snap as the Carolina Panthers quarterback, it will also be his first snap against the team that drafted him and traded him just three years later, the New York Jets.

Over his three years in the Big Apple, the former third-overall pick only notched together 13 wins in his 38 appearances, while throwing for 8,097 passing yards and 45 touchdowns to 39 interceptions. Darnold had his best season in 2019 when he led the Jets to a 7-6 record with 19 touchdowns against 13interceptions. While he displayed flashes of what he could be, Darnold has a lot of work to do to stake his claim as one of the better quarterbacks in the league.

Not to take a backseat to Darnold’s new team debut, New York’s Zach Wilson will make his NFL debut against his predecessor. With 43 touchdowns (33 passing and 10 rushing), Wilson rose up the ranks last college football season on his way to being selected second-overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. As the second quarterback off the board, Wilson was drafted as Darnold’s imminent replacement.

While the two insist this game will not be about outdueling one another, you can be sure that both quarterbacks are looking to make a statement for their respective new teams.
