You are only a head coach in the NFL until you are fired or you decide to retire from coaching.

As it will be every NFL offseason, several head coaches will get the ax either around Black Monday or even sometime before that if their former team was terrible enough.

Last offseason cycle saw seven head-coaching changes. It may not be that many this winter, but there is no way all 32 head coaches are returning in 2022. While some head coaches like Urban Meyer and Arthur Smith did not look good in their NFL debuts, it is not like the Detroit Lions, the Jacksonville Jaguars or the Atlanta Falcons were expected to contend for the playoffs anyway.

However, three other head coaches may be feeling some heat after how Week 1 went for them.

Frank Reich hitching his wagon to Carson Wentz has disaster written all over it

This is hard to believe, but the Indianapolis Colts cannot be happy with what Frank Reich did Week 1 vs. the Seattle Seahawks. The Colts should win the division, but Reich hitching his wagon to former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz is like tying a boat anchor to your foot. If the Colts do not win the AFC South this year, when are they ever going to do it? It all falls on Reich.

Indianapolis has not won the AFC South since 2014, which was Andrew Luck’s third season out of Stanford. He turned 32-years-old today, and has not played for the Colts since Reich’s first season in Indianapolis. While I understand the quarterback carousel has not been easy, the Colts traded for Reich’s guy, and they looked outclassed vs. a playoff team in Seattle. They have to play better.

Really what this game showed us is even if the Colts are the cream of the crop in the AFC South, they are not beating anybody of note come playoff time. While it is hard to go from good to great, that may be what the Colts have to do with Reich this offseason. What makes this loss even worse was that it was at home. Seattle played an 10:00 a.m. PT game and throughly dominated.

While we should expect the Colts to be better this season, Week 1 was full of disappointment.
