MLB Playoffs bracket if the season ended today

Here is how the American League postseason field would look on Monday, Sept. 13.

With the MLB regular season entering into the last leg before playoffs start on Oct 5, several teams remain in the hunt to secure postseason berths. Most teams are hovering around 20 or so games left and should be extra cautious in making sure they either stay ahead of the pack or don’t drift too far in the opposite direction.

Here is the playoff bracket if the season were to end on Monday morning, Sept. 13.

At the helm of the American League is the Tampa Bay Rays sitting at 89-54. The Chicago White Sox (82-61) are a virtual lock for the playoffs with their lead over the AL Central and the Houston Astros (83-59) hold a small advantage over the AL West.

With the Rays holding onto the AL East lead, the Blue Jays (80-63), Red Sox (81-64) and Yankees (79-64) are all vying to secure Wildcard spots in the AL.

In the National League, there’s a much tighter race at the top: The Giants (93-50), the Dodgers (91-50) and the Brewers (89-55) remain in the hunt for the No.1 seed in the conference. The Atlanta Braves (76-66) hold a marginal lead over the Phillies (72-71) and Mets (72-72) in the NL East.

While Milwaukee holds a big enough lead in the win-column to practically secure them NL Central winner, the Giants and Dodgers remain in a deadlock for the NL West title. The Giants won a close season series at 10-9, so San Francisco maintains the tiebreaker. Whoever loses out between the two will be a lock for the Wild Card game.

As it stands, the San Diego Padres hold the tiebreaker over Cincinnati and would be the wildcard matchup for whoever the NL West runner-up is.

Here is how the American League postseason field would look on Monday, Sept. 13:

  • AL Wild Card Game: Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays
  • AL Division Series: Winner of Boston Red Sox/Toronto Blue Jays at (1) Tampa Bay Rays
  • AL Division Series: (3) Chicago White Sox at (2) Houston Astros

Now here is the National League field:

  • NL Wild Card Game: San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers
  • NL Division Series: Winner of San Diego Padres/Los Angeles Dodgers at (1) San Francisco Giants
  • NL Division Series: (3) Atlanta Braves at (2) Milwaukee Brewers

Wild Card Hunt:

  • AL: Yankees, Athletics, Mariners
  • NL: Reds, Cardinals, Phillies, Mets
