Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll had a magical tenure with USC football. Would he leave Seattle to go back to the Trojans?

When USC fired Clay Helton, the first thing on the mind of the college football world was who might replace him.

In fact, almost immediately after the news broke Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll faced a question about the possibility of going back to college to take over at USC once more.

“They haven’t called,” Carroll said per Aaron Levine of KCPQ. “No, I don’t want that. I’m very happy.”

Pete Carroll doesn’t want to be one of the USC head coach candidates

Carroll wasn’t USC’s first choice when they hired him in 2001, but he quickly proved his worth by turning the Trojans into one of the top programs of the 2000s. He won two national titles, produced two Heisman winners and won the Pac-10 eight times.

The idea of Carroll coming back should be intriguing. Though he’s firmly focused on getting the Seahawks to the NFL pinnacle again, he is one year short of eligibility for the College Football Hall of Fame. He only coached nine years in college and coaches need 10 years to be considered.

Since it’s highly unlikely for Carroll to return, the Trojans will have to look at other candidates. There are tons of them out there. The hard part is identifying the one that can get USC back to the heights Carroll took them.
