1. Elijah Mitchell, RB, San Francisco 49ers
One of the big surprises in fantasy circles in Week 1 was when the inactives were named. For the 49ers, it was rookie Trey Sermon — who many thought would lead the backfield — that was named a healthy scratch. Instead, their other rookie Elijah Mitchell was active and blew up as Raheem Mostert suffered what has become an inevitable annual early-season injury.
With Mostert’s departure, Mitchell seized this backfield, rushing 19 times for 104 yards and a touchdown. Not only do the stats look good, but Mitchell himself looked like a good real-life football player, and he’s going to be someone that Kyle Shanahan wants on the field.
Mitchell is a must-add in your fantasy team, and he’ll obviously be a hot commodity. You’ll need to either have a high waiver pick or spend a lot of your FAAB (money to bid on free agents) to get him, depending on what method your league uses.
Mitchell’s potential outcomes range from: back-up who filled in nicely for Mostert but will resume bench duties when Mostert returns, or a guy who just seized a backfield that wants to run the ball all game and could be a potential league-winner for you. Take the gamble on the latter and pick him up.
