5. The Detroit Pistons could use John Wall

First up, we’ll start with the team that had this year’s first-overall draft pick and selected Cade Cunningham — the Detroit Pistons. If Wall’s not adamant about getting to a team that is in win-now mode, the former first-overall pick in 2010 could provide extremely valuable minutes off the bench for this young Pistons core.

Despite having to offload the “bad” contracts of Andre Drummond and Blake Griffin in recent years, Detroit has found some good fortune in recent draft picks (Cunningham, No.1 in 2021 draft and Killian Hayes, No. 7 in 2020 draft) and in the development of swingman Jerami Grant, last season’s Most Improved Player runner-up. The organization seems to be trending in the right direction but is a youth factory and could benefit from Wall’s expertise and mentorship for its young guards.

Cunningham and Hayes possess some similarities to a young Wall in that he was a bigger guard with some quickness, crafty playmaking and defensive versatility. Wall’s ability to create plays for himself and teammates while still being a 20-point-per-game scorer could bode well for the Pistons, especially if he’s coming off the bench to contribute.
