Astros broadcasters let Diamondbacks have it for brutal loss on HBP (Video)
By Mark Powell
Despite having no hits through 5.2 innings, the Houston Astros emerged victorious over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the tenth thanks to a timely HBP.
Madison Bumgarner fell just short of six innings of no-hit ball. That attempt was broken up by Houston, as was any chance of MadBum picking up a victory in the later innings.
Yet, it was Diamondbacks reliever Tyler Clippard who proved to be the WOAT in the bottom of the tenth. Clippard, who had an 0-2 count advantage at the time, hit Chas McCormick with a pitch, walking in the winning run.
As bizarre as that encounter was, to some it was downright hilarious. The Houston Astros broadcast did far more boasting in the booth than celebrating, letting Clippard and the D’Backs have it.
Houston Astros perplexed by win, but they’ll take it
“Boy, that was a strange game,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said. “It was a weird game. We had one hit and two runs [for a while], and they had one run and a whole bunch of hits. Fortunately for us, they left a whole lot of runners on base, and our pitchers pitched out of a lot of jams. But our guys, they kept battling.”
The Astros are the Astros, and the Diamondbacks aren’t very good. As simple as that sounds, it’s a point the broadcast rubs in our faces and, for now, they’re correct.
Bad teams lose these types of ball-games, while those with winning cultures find ways to eek one out. Houston will take many more where that came from.
