Chicago Cubs: David Bote hasn’t been what they need

Bote has been on and off the injured list, but even when healthy the slugger is hitting under the Mendoza line, making it easy to question why exactly he’s still in the Cubs’ future plans.

Perhaps this season will be enough to prove that he’s just not all that productive at the plate. While a rebuild is the time to see what young players are made of, Bote is 28 years old. The man is supposed to be in his prime, and instead he’s ending up on the injured list by stepping on baseballs.

A change of scenery could do Bote some good, because whatever coaching he’s received isn’t working. Bote is a low-ball hitter, that much is clear. Any power he’s showed in years past has come from that approach. But at this point his failure to hit for average and get on base at a consistent clip is enough to keep him out of the lineup for anyone but the Cubs.

Assuming he doesn’t improve much in the season’s final few weeks, the Cubs should do the right thing for both sides and cut the chord.
