3 quarterbacks the Dolphins can replace Tua Tagovailoa with
2. Cam Newton
Rather than keep him around as Mac Jones’ backup, the Patriots let Newton go before the season started. This side of Watson, who’s of course available in theory, the former league MVP stands the best quarterback available. And of course, he comes without the huge hurdles to bringing him in. Any team could sign him tomorrow if they wanted to, and it’s unclear if any teams have made him an offer over the past few weeks.
If that is his plan, and his comments about there not being 32 quarterbacks in the league better than him suggests it is, Newton is smart to wait for an injury to a starting quarterback somewhere before he signs. The Dolphins had theirs get banged up on Sunday, with it TBD how much (if any) time he’ll miss.
Newton probably wouldn’t want to be a stopgap for Miami, effectively keeping the starting job warm for Tagovailoa for only a few weeks. But if Monday’s MRI brings dismal news, the Dolphins will surely be making a call to Newton’s agent.
