3 quarterbacks the Dolphins can replace Tua Tagovailoa with
1. Jacoby Brissett
Brissett replaced Tagovailoa against the Bills on Sunday, and completed 24 of 40 passes for 169 yards with an interception. He was brought in by Miami to be an experienced backup for Tagovailoa, and a capable fill-in if called upon, and he sneakily has a lot of starts under his belt in his career.
Brissett started two games for the New England Patriots as a rookie in 2016, when Tom Brady served out his “DeFlateGate” suspension and Jimmy Garoppolo was injured. He was traded to the Indianapolis Colts just before the 2017 season started, and wound up starting 15 games as Andrew Luck missed the entire season. Then in 2019, when Luck suddenly announced his retirement in late-August, Brissett made 15 starts again that season. His two nearly full seasons as a starter have come while having to learn a new offense and then taking over as the No.1 quarterback on short notice with Luck’s late retirement announcement. Less than ideal circumstances, obviously.
If Tagovailoa is deemed unlikely to miss more than a couple games, the Dolphins will probably just ride it out with Brissett as the starter. If a longer absence is in play, Brissett still might be the guy Miami goes with.
