MLB playoff bracket and Wild Card update for September 19

If the MLB season ended on Sept. 19, 2021, the playoff field would be decided by season-changing wins and losses on Sunday.

The Wild Card standings are likely not to be decided until the season’s final days. Meanwhile, the divisions, in some cases, are relatively set.

With that being said, here’s what the playoff bracket would look like if the MLB season ended this Sunday.

National League Field

NL Wild Card Game: St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers
NL Division Series: Winner of St. Louis Cardinals/Los Angeles Dodgers at (1) San Francisco Giants
NL Division Series: (3) Atlanta Braves at (2) Milwaukee Brewers

American League Field

AL Wild Card Game: Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox
AL Division Series: Winner of Boston Red Sox/Toronto Blue Jays at (1) Tampa Bay Rays
AL Division Series: (3) Chicago White Sox at (2) Houston Astros

Wild Card Hunt:

AL: Yankees, Athletics, Mariners
NL: Padres, Reds, Phillies, Mets

MLB Wild Card Standings: September 19

The Wild Card race in both leagues is almost as close as you can get. Let’s take a look at the AL and NL, respectively.

In the American League, the Red Sox and Blue Jays hold a narrow lead over the Yankees. New York is losing at a rapid pace, falling in both of their games against the Cleveland Indians on Saturday and Sunday. The Jays took home two wins over the Minnesota Twins, giving them the edge over New York.

Meanwhile the Red Sox maintain a one-game lead on the Blue Jays for the No. 1 Wild Card spot, which determines home-field advantage in the Wild Card Game.

In the National League, the Dodgers have a stranglehold on the No. 1 Wild Card spot, with a 16.5-game lead on the St. Louis Cardinals. They will host the Wild Card Game.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, hold a 3.5-game lead over the San Diego Padres (who they are ironically playing this weekend) and a three-game lead on the Cincinnati Reds. Closing in on the Atlanta Braves in the NL East (1.5 game behind), the Phillies are just a few games back in the Wild Card, while the Mets’ chances are fading, as they face a six-game deficit.
