Jon Lester’s 200th win is depressing irony for Cubs
By Josie Rohach
Starting pitcher Jon Lester has 200 career wins with the Cardinals, and Chicago Cubs fans are suffering.
Former Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jon Lester officially has 200 career wins to his name. The milestone win came in a St. Louis Cardinals jersey as they defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 on Monday night. Impressively, Lester is only the 119th pitcher in the MLB’s 118-year history to earn at least 200 wins.
For baseball fans, Lester’s accomplishment is brilliant and praiseworthy no matter who you root for. For Cubs fans, it’s a punch to the gut.
Lester’s 200th came with the Cubs rivals and officially knocked them out of playoff contention.
Cubs were eliminated from the postseason on the back of Jon Lester’s 200th win
The 200th career win for Lester was the 80th win for St. Louis this season, and with the Cubs looking at a best-case 79 win season, the second Wild Card spot behind either the Giants or the Dodgers is just out of their reach.
What is the worst part? Lester said months ago that he wanted this moment to happen while he was in Chicago, and he wanted to retire a Cub. He won 77 games for the Cubs organization in six seasons and was just seven wins shy of the 200-win milestone when Chicago let him walk before the 2021 season.
It’s a tough day for Cubs fans who have to grieve the death of their postseason hopes at the hands of a pitcher who wishes he was making another postseason run with them instead.
