The Toronto Blue Jays have received multiple suspensions following the benches-clearing incident on Wednesday with the Tampa Bay Rays.

There’s been plenty of drama this week between the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays. It all started when Kevin Keirmaier picked up a card that had Toronto’s game plan on it. Well, things have gone south ever since.

In Wednesday’s showdown, Toronto decided to throw at Kiermaier. Next thing you knew, tempers flared and the benches cleared. Well, MLB decided to punish Toronto, as manager Charlie Montoyo has been suspended for one game, while pitcher Ryan Borucki is out for three contests.

These suspensions send quite the message to the rest of the league. At the same time, this is a big blow for the Blue Jays. This team is fighting for their postseason lives. As of this writing, Toronto is 0.5 games back of the New York Yankees for the second AL Wild Card spot. Boston is 2.5 games ahead of the Blue Jays.

There are five teams in the AL Wild Card hunt: Boston, New York, Toronto, Seattle and Oakland. Now, the Blue Jays, who lost two of three games to Tampa Bay this week, have these suspensions hanging over their heads.

The club was understandably upset when video emerged of Kiermaier grabbing a card that fell out of Alejando Kirk’s wristband. As soon as that happened, folks on Twitter, especially Blue Jays fans, were losing their minds.

This all led to Borucki drilling Kiermaier with a high heater in the final game of their three-game series. That decision has come with a cost, though, with Montoyo receiving his one-game ban, and Borucki getting three games.
