Phillies tie awful major league record at worst possible time

The Philadelphia Phillies tied the major league record for blown saves at a crucial point in the season. 

This isn’t exactly the time of year that the Philadelphia Phillies want to be making news in a bad way. In Friday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Phillies tied an MLB record with a whopping 34 blown saves with pitcher Cam Bedrosian on the mound.

Thanks to a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning from Didi Gregorius, the Phillies escaped with an 8-6 win. Philadelphia currently sits five games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Wild Card race, so it’s not the time to be setting those types of records.

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Phillies set a new franchise-record with their 30th blown save in a single-season. If Philadelphia hits 35 this season, it’ll make history.

After leading the league in blown saves for the majority of the season, the Phillies clearly have a bullpen that’s struggling.

Pittsburgh currently holds a disappointing 57-96 record and Philadelphia, 80-74, has two games left in the weekend series, but the Phillies’ hopes of making it to the postseason aren’t looking too good.

As of right now, Philadelphia has a 20 percent chance of making the playoffs. Unless the Cardinals utterly fall apart, it’s looking like one of the main takeaways from the Phillies’ 2021 season will be blown saves.

The only thing that Philadelphia should be looking to break is its postseason drought. It’s been an entire decade since the Phillies last made the playoffs.

Oh well, at least you can count on Philadelphia for one thing, at least.
