When is the last time Tennessee beat Florida in The Swamp?
The Tennessee Volunteers travel to play the Florida Gators and try to do something they haven’t done in a long time.
This Saturday, the No. 11 Florida Gators host the Tennessee Volunteers. The game will be in primetime on ESPN. All eyes will be locked in to see if the Vols can do something they haven’t done in a long time. That’s winning a game in The Swamp.
When did Tennessee last beat Florida in the Swamp?
The last time the Vols traveled down to Florida and left with a victory was on Sept. 21, 2003, when Casey Clausen was the quarterback for Tennessee. George W. Bush was in his first term and “Shake Ya Tailfeather” by Murphy Lee, Nelly and P. Diddy was the No. 1 song in the country.
Tennessee was the No. 12 team in the country and Florida was ranked No. 17. The Volunteers beat the Gators comfortably 24-10. Since then, Tennessee has been 0-8 in Gainesville. In fact, since that ‘03 victory, Tennessee is 2-15 overall in the “Third Saturday in September” rivalry.
Can Tennessee beat Florida in Gainesville this Saturday?
The Volunteers have the opportunity to change things this Saturday. They come into the game 2-1, the same record as No. 12 Florida. Tennessee is coming off a 56-0 victory after beating up on Tennessee Tech. A game like that could be useful to give the Volunteers the necessary confidence to go into The Swamp and upset Florida.
The only issue is Florida is coming off a confidence-building game as well. For them, it was a loss to No. 1 ranked Alabama. After a 21-3 first quarter that left many thinking the Gators would be blown out, they stormed back into the game and eventually lost 31-29. While athletes don’t generally find much solace in moral victories, Florida will definitely approach the rest of the season with a new confidence knowing that they were a play or two away from knocking off the dominant Crimson Tide.
Who will start at quarterback for Tennessee?
Two weeks ago, Tennessee starting quarterback Joe Milton III went down with a lower-leg injury and opening the door for Virginia Tech transfer Hendon Hooker the opportunity to play. In a game and a half, Hooker has passed for 392 yards and five touchdowns while running for 113 yards and another touchdown.
It is still undecided if Milton III will be available to play against the Gators, but Hooker’s performance has caused some uncertainty about whether should immediately be back behind center when he is healthy. Whoever it is taking snaps for the Volunteers, they will need a huge day if they want to do something they haven’t done since before members of their team were born.
