On Saturday, the Wisconsin Badgers will face off against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a football game for the first time in nearly 60 years.

The last time the Wisconsin Badgers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish faced off against one another, Bonanza was the best show on television, Martin Luther King had won a Noble Peace Prize, the Boston Celtics had won their seventh NBA Championship and Lyndon B. Johnson was the president of the United States. This was 1964.

Saturday’s game at Soldier Field in Chicago is the first time the two have met in 57 years and just the 15th meeting overall.

Notre Dame and Wisconsin are playing for the first time since 1964

While there is no modern history between the teams, the appeal of this game is not just that it’s a battle of two ranked teams — the Fighting Irish are No. 12 and the Badgers are No. 18 — but that these teams have not faced one another in 57 years. College GameDay will be at the game to commemorate this historic event.

In their past contests, the Fighting Irish hold the series lead with an 8-6-2 record. That year, the Fighting Irish went on to the National Championship game where they lost to Alabama. Since this time, Notre Dame has won four national championships, while the Badgers have yet to reach the title game.

There is one modern tie between the two schools: Notre Dame’s starting quarterback is Wisconsin-transfer Jack Coan, who lost his job in Wisconsin to Graham Mertz after a foot injury. Coan was named the starter for the Fighting Irish in August after transferring in January.

The game will be on FOX at 12 p.m. ET.
