D’Eriq King is out for Miami against Central Connecticut and Tyler Van Dyke will make his first career start for the Hurricanes.

Miami football has a new starting quarterback. D’Eriq King is out with an injury and Tyler Van Dyke will get the start for Manny Diaz’s team that’s already suffered two losses this season.

Van Dyke is a 6-foot-4 freshman from Suffolk Academy and hails fromĀ Glastonbury, Conn. It’s fitting his first career start comes against Central Connecticut.

This could be the first of many starts for Van Dyke if King is unable to make a quick recovery.

In 2020, Van Dyke saw limited time in the blowout win over Florida State and appeared in the regular-season finale vs. North Carolina. He attempted one pass in the season-opening loss to Alabama earlier this year.

Van Dyke was a former four-star recruit, ranked as the No. 222 overall recruit by the 247Sports Composite and the No. 7 pro-style passer.

With a background as a pitcher, Van Dyke is athletic and has a live arm and was previously compared to former Michigan State quarterback and current Minnesota Vikings signal-caller Kirk Cousins.

Van Dyke had an impressive spring and summer while King rehabbed from the torn ACL he suffered in the bowl game. Van Dyke could be the future of the position for Miami if he nails his audition with King out.
