Veteran umpire Joe West’s questionable strike zone made things that much more difficult during Sunday’s Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees game.

The 2021 MLB season is entering it’s final week, and that means all eyes will be on the hectic race to the finish line to see who will clinch the two Wild Card berths in the American League. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox took part in their final meeting of the season. There was one thing that would make the game difficult — umpire Joe West was behind home plate. And if you thought he would make things easy, you are wrong.

In the top of the third inning, Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez struck out Yankees infielder D.J. LeMahieu on a throw inside that landed outside of the strike zone. LeMahieu was flabbergasted by the call, and even Rodriguez walked off the mound in shock with a smirk on his face.

Joe West’s strike zone mars Sunday’s Red Sox-Yankees game

Not ideal for either team, who are both looking to gain traction in the Wild Card standings.

Entering Sunday night, the Yankees and Red Sox were both tied 88-67 records for both Wild Card berths. However, the Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics are all trailing the squads within four games. Not exactly an ideal time to deal with a questionable strike zone in a must-win contest.
