Whether 49ers defensive back Jimmy Ward meant to do it or not, he should’ve been kicked out of the game for his hit on Packers wideout Davante Adams.

Instead, Ward was not immediately flagged and Adams was down on the play.

Packers fans collectively held their breath with Adams on the turf, who will hopefully make a full recovery.

Jimmy Ward took out Davante Adams with a dirty hit

Adams was running deep on the play, and after the ball was deflected, Ward came across from his safety spot and laid out Aaron Rodgers’ favorite weapon.

There was no real explanation given as to why this wasn’t flagged. Adams was a defenseless receiver and the 49ers defensive back flew in making helmet-to-helmet contact.

The league has tried to emphasize eliminating hits like that from the game. Failing to penalize that one isn’t a good look for referees, especially since they called a tripping penalty on a Packers defender just a few minutes before. The more trivial flag got thrown. The more serious stayed in the pocket.

The good news is Adams was cleared to return to the game soon after taking that blow. While he looked rattled initially, he escaped any major head injury. That’s the important thing.
